Family First: Fun Activities to Bond and Make Memories. Winter Edition

Winter can be a challenging time of year for some, but it can truly be a beautiful season where you can make memories together as a family.

Although the Winter months may feel limiting, remember that Winter brings a lot of unique opportunities for a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. Here’s a mix of options for you to enjoy as a family:

Outdoor-

  1. Snowball Fights– Have a friendly snowball fight in the backyard or a nearby park. Build forts, snowmen & stock piles and have some good, safe fun. Snowball fights are great ways to let go of some extra energy, make memories and have a ton of laughs!
  2. Ice Skating- Head to a local outdoor ice rink for some ice skating fun. If you’re an avid ice skater, this is the perfect chance to use your skates and let loose. If you rarely, or never ice skate, don’t worry, most places let you rent skates. Either way, enjoy some laps around the rink and glide.
  3. Snowboarding & Skiing- If you have access to slopes, I hear skiing and snowboarding is an awesome way to enjoy the winter scenery and get some exercise. Personally, It’s not my cup of team, I enjoy both feet firmly on the ground, but my friends who ski/snowboard swear by it. Chances are, if there is fresh plow, and they can get out of work, they’re on the slopes having the time of their lives. So give it a chance and decide for yourself if you have the opportunity.
  4. Winter Hiking- Explore winter trails in a nearby park. The fresh winter air and views allow for a refreshing outdoor adventure. You’d really be surprised how nature changes with the weather, it’s worth re-walking a trail you’ve walked before and taking in the scenery.
  5. Winter Scavenger Hunt- Create a list of winter-themed items to find outdoors, such as pinecones, icicles, or animal footprints. Just explore new and old places. Scavenger hunts are a great way to cover ground and stay busy. It may even be worth sitting down as a family and creating a winter scavenger hunt specific to your area that covers – nature, restaurants, markets & more!

Indoor Activities-

  1. Winter-themed Cooking:– Have a family cooking day to make some winter comfort foods like hot chocolate, cider, cookies, or try your hand at making a yummy soup!
  2. Board Game Marathon- Choose a few of your favorite board games and have a game night, or day. Board games are a great way to stay warm indoors on a particularly wet or cold day, and have some friendly competition, while giving your eyes a break from the harsh screens.
  3. Winter Decorations- Spend a day making some winter decorations for your home. Think – paper snowflakes, handcrafted ornaments, a wreath or cards. This may even be the perfect time of year to focus on a hobby you’ve been wanting to spend time on.
  4. Movie/ TV Show Marathon:– Pick a series or a movie and have a cozy movie marathon with blankets and snacks. Adult lunch-ables, anyone?
  5. Reading Time:– Choose a book and dive into the pages. It’s a relaxing way to spend time together and encourage a love of reading.

No matter what though, just make the best of these colder, darker months and have fun. Spend time together as a family, and enjoy what the Winter months have to offer while making new memories. Luckily for us, we also have some pretty big holidays during this season, including the chance to kick start the New Year with a clean slate!
