Adventure Awaits: Exploring New Places Alone

Embarking on a solo adventure can be equally an extremely rewarding and empowering experience. By exploring new places alone, you are able to step out of your comfort zone, gain invaluable independence, and create lasting memories.

Here are some tips to make the most of your solo adventures and my experience:

  1. Plan Ahead-
    • Research your destination thoroughly, including local customs, transportation options, and safety tips. Having a basic plan will help you feel more confident and prepared. In fact, every time I travel, regardless if I’ll be alone or with a group the first thing I do is research. I look up top places to visit at my destination, average costs, distances, events going on and food options.
  2. Start Small-
    • If you’re new to solo travel, consider starting with a short day trip or weekend getaway to a nearby location. Gradually work your way up to more extended solo journeys. This is huge. Most trips have the same amount of work: planning wise at least, so even a one night solo trip will help you gain some experience & get some jitters out of the way setting you up for success for a longer trip away from home.
  3. Trust Your Instincts-
    • Listen to your intuition and trust your instincts. If a situation doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from it. Be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant. Stay vigilant, and keep yourself and items safe. If you see a dark road, consider a different route. If you’re entering a crowded place, move your bag to in front of you.
  4. Connect with Locals-
    • Engage with locals to get a deeper understanding of the culture and community. Attend local events, visit markets, or strike up conversations with people you meet along the way. Foodie Tours, Walking Tours and Cooking Classes are my favorite way to learn about a new destination. Usually, AJ & I schedule a walking tour earlier on, so that we can better pick what we want to do with the rest of our time exploring.
  5. Stay Connected-
    • Keep friends and family informed about your travel plans. Share your itinerary and check in regularly, whether through phone calls, messages, or social media updates. I also share my location & keep someone up to date with where I’m heading and when I’m in for the night. That way if they don’t hear from me by a certain time, they’re updated on where I was last. AJ also always knows the contact info to where I’m staying along with all my flight info.
  6. Embrace Spontaneity
    • While planning is essential, leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best experiences can come from unplanned moments and unexpected opportunities. That’s why my first step is research, but I only book experiences I am dead set on doing, because things change, and I don’t know what I might discover when I get feet on the ground!
  7. Learn Basic Local Phrases
    • Familiarize yourself with basic phrases in the local language. This effort is often appreciated by locals and can enhance your overall travel experience. This is beyond true — You’ll be surprised how welcoming people can be when you at least try to speak their language.
  8. Capture the Moment
    • Take plenty of photos to capture the beauty and uniqueness of the places you visit. Documenting your journey allows you to relive the experience and share it with others when you get back home. This also applies to other travels you meet along the way. I have been in a hostel in London, where my roommates had come from other countries and were on their way to another destination, and we were able to share our experiences & pictures with each other to help us with our next travels. Also, don’t be scared to ask a stranger to take a picture of you!
  9. Enjoy Your Own Company
    • Embrace solitude and take time for self-reflection. Solo travel provides an excellent opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and the chance to enjoy your own company. While there are pros of traveling with friends & family, traveling alone allows you to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Do you want to sleep in? Go for it. Spend 3 hours in a book store, happy reading!
  10. Be Open to New Experiences-
    • Say yes to new experiences and be open to trying things you wouldn’t normally do. This is your chance to step outside your comfort zone and create unforgettable memories. Just remember to make smart, safe choices!

I truly do believe that solo traveling is a way of passage for an individual. So embrace the freedom it offers and savor the opportunity to explore new places, your way!
