Fitness Friday: Incorporating Exercise into Your Daily Routine

Great choice to focus on incorporating exercise into your daily routine! Making physical activity a consistent part of your day has numerous health benefits, both physical and mental, only problem is that this is very difficult for me to commit to. So let’s do this together–

Here are some tips I am aiming to incorporate back into my life to seamlessly integrate exercise into my daily life:

  1. Start with Small Steps- Begin with simple goals. For example, commit to a 10-minute walk during your lunch break or take the stairs instead of the elevator. Gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness improves.
  2. Find Activities You Enjoy– Choose activities you enjoy. Hiking, dancing, climbing or playing a sport can make exercise feel less like a chore. For me, I am opting for traveling & photography.
  3. Schedule Your Workouts– Treat your exercise sessions like important appointments. Block off time in your calendar for workouts, and make them non-negotiable. Consistency is key when building a fitness routine.
  4. Make It a Habit– Aim to exercise at the same time each day. Establishing a routine helps turn exercise into a habit, making it easier to prioritize and incorporate into your daily life.
  5. Combine Exercise with Daily Tasks- Look for opportunities to be active throughout the day. For example, walk or bike to work, do bodyweight exercises during TV commercials, or take a brisk stroll after dinner. Multi-tasking can help you get more done while staying active. For example right now with the cold, I’ve been walking 30 minutes on the treadmill while reading a book or watching Charmed.
  6. Involve Friends or Family- Include your loved ones in your fitness routine. Plan activities that you can do together, such as hiking, playing sports, or taking fitness classes. This not only makes exercise more enjoyable but also strengthens your social connections. Bonus if it’s a co-worker who is already with you most days of the week! Shoutout to Karen!

  8. Set Realistic Goals– Set achievable and specific fitness goals. Gradually increase intensity and duration as your fitness level improves. Rome wasn’t built in a day, right?
  9. Use Technology to Your Advantage- Fitness apps and smartwatches can track your progress. Set reminders on your phone to remind you to move throughout the day. In fact, most apps/watches already have a setting you can turn on that remind you to move.
  10. Prioritize Variety– Mix up your workouts to prevent boredom and target different muscle groups. This can include a combination of cardio, strength training, flexibility exercises, and activities that improve balance and coordination.
  11. Listen to Your Body- Be mindful of your body’s signals. Adjust your routine based on how you feel and any potential injuries. Maybe you can’t do a strenuous activity you planned to today, but instead of doing nothing, just swap that activity with stretching or a brisk walk.
