PCS Hacks: Prepping for a Smooth Move and Embracing Change

Moving can be both super exhilarating and stressful at the same time. Whether you’re relocating across town, across the country or to an entirely different continent, the process of packing up your life and starting over can be overwhelming. However, with the right strategies and mindset, you can turn your moving experience into a smoother transition. Today, we’ll explore some packing hacks to help you prepare for your move while embracing change with confidence!

  1. Start Early-
    • Begin packing non-essential items well in advance of your move date. Create a packing timeline to stay organized and ensure everything gets packed on time. Maybe the holidays passed already, and you’re moving this summer. Take some time to organize and pack up holiday items you won’t be needing until next season.
  2. Declutter-
    • Before packing, take the opportunity to declutter your belongings. Donate or sell items you no longer need or use to lighten your load and simplify the moving process. Take advantage of auction pages on Facebook and let your clutter bring joy to someone else’s life, but extra cash into yours.
  3. Gather Packing Supplies-
    • Stock up on packing materials such as boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, and markers. Consider using eco-friendly packing materials or reusing boxes to reduce waste. Hello, we all get Amazon boxes. This is their time to shine!
  4. Pack Strategically-
    • Pack room by room to keep items organized and make unpacking easier. Use smaller boxes for heavy items and larger boxes for lighter items to prevent strain during lifting. Label boxes clearly with the contents and the room they belong to for efficient unpacking. I actually got super helpful color stickers that allowed me to quickly add a blue sticker that means guest room, vs red that might mean living room. That helps you provide quick guidance when moving into your new home.
  5. Protect Fragile Items-
    • Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap or packing paper and fill any empty space in boxes with cushioning material. Pack delicate items such as dishes vertically to minimize the risk of breakage. Or you can let the professional moving company do it, and hope for the best.
  6. Utilize Space Wisely-
    • Maximize space in boxes by filling empty gaps with smaller items or clothing. Utilize suitcases, laundry baskets, and other containers for packing to make the most of available space. This also adds an extra layer of cushion sometimes, which can make a big difference on big moves.
  7. Keep Essentials Handy-
    • Pack a separate box or bag with essential items you’ll need immediately upon arrival, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents. Keep this box easily accessible during the move to avoid rummaging through packed boxes. We had a designated suitcase when we PCSd to Germany and I swear by it. The suitcase had everything from a can opener, skillet, Adobo seasoning, pillow, blanket, towel, cutting sheet, knife, roll of toilet paper, paper towel & lysol wipes. This was a life saver after traveling for over a day, and arriving to our new home at 1am.
  8. Stay Positive and Flexible-
    • Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and new experiences. Stay positive throughout the moving process, even if unexpected challenges arise. It will all work out in the end, try your best to just roll with the curveballs instead of letting it define your entire experience.

Overall, no matter the why, moving can be a daunting task, but with the right approach, it can also be an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. By following these packing hacks and embracing change with a positive mindset, you can navigate your move with ease and confidence. Remember to stay organized, declutter, and prioritize self-care throughout the process. Here’s to a smooth move and the adventures that lie ahead!
