Solo Traveler Backpacking Tips

For a solo traveler packing for a backpacking adventure, efficient packing is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. Here are some tips to help you pack smartly:

  1. Choose the Right Backpack- Invest in a high-quality, comfortable backpack that fits your body well and has sufficient capacity for your belongings. Look for features like padded shoulder straps, a hip belt for weight distribution, and multiple compartments for organization. My personal go to is this 30L Osprey backpack.
  2. Pack Light- Remember that you’ll be carrying everything on your back, so pack only the essentials. Stick to versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched, and opt for lightweight, quick-drying fabrics. Consider the weather and what you’ll be doing, then to tailor your outfits accordingly. I’ve even packed a pair a flats for a formal night I was ready to part ways with after that event, which also freed up space for souvenirs.
  3. Prioritize Essentials- Start by packing your essentials, such as a medications, toiletries, travel documents, and any necessary items. These items should be easily accessible in your backpack for convenience. I even have a hygiene bag that I reset and top off when I get back home each trip, which takes part of the packing stress off me for my next trip.
  4. Organize Efficiently- Use packing cubes or compression sacks to maximize space and keep your belongings organized. Separate items by category (e.g., clothing, toiletries, electronics) to streamline packing and make it easier to find what you need. I use a mixture of packing cubes and a Marie Kondo style when packing making picking clothes and staying organized easy.
  5. Pack Multi-Purpose Items- Choose items that serve multiple functions to minimize the number of things you need to carry. For example, a lightweight scarf can double as a blanket or a beach towel, while a Kindle can house more than one book.
  6. Limit Gadgets and Electronics- While it’s tempting to bring along all your tech gadgets, consider whether you really need them. Opt for a lightweight and compact smartphone that can serve multiple purposes, such as a camera, GPS, and communication device. If you really want to take gadgets, make sure they are practical and won’t take up much space. Such as my DJI Pocket camera I can easily throw in my purse, that takes stabilized videos.
  7. Consider Local Purchases- Instead of packing bulky items like toiletries and sunscreen, consider purchasing them locally at your destination. This not only saves space in your backpack but also supports the local economy, plus it gives you a reason to checkout where the locals shop possibly.
  8. Don’t Forget Emergency Essentials- Pack a small light, a USB fan, first aid items, and a portable charger for emergencies. These items can be invaluable in unexpected situations and provide peace of mind while traveling solo.
  9. Leave Room for Souvenirs- Remember to leave some space in your backpack for souvenirs or items you may pickup during your travels. Consider packing a foldable daypack that you can use for day trips or shopping excursions.
  10. Test Your Backpack- Before setting off on your adventure, test your fully packed backpack to ensure it’s comfortable and properly balanced. Adjust the straps and weight distribution as needed to minimize strain on your back and shoulders. Your body will thank you for this!

While we all may prioritize things differently, it’s helpful to take note of trends you may see. Such as, do you always forget a hygiene item, pack ahead of time peacefully. Does your phone always die, have a universal charging cube & a portable charger. Are you used to white noise, and a fan/AC? Most European cities actually keep the heaters on during the winter season, even when the temps get warmer. A USB fan will help tremendously.

So make sure to think ahead, find what works best for you and you’ll be well-prepared to embark on your solo backpacking adventure with confidence and ease. Safe travels!
