Making Plans, When the Future is Unknown – Military Family

By now you’ve probably seen that we’re moving back to the States sometime this Summer, but what does that actually mean for us?

A lot of unknowns is what that means – and that scares me and it sucks.

Surrounding our upcoming permanent change of station (PCS)-

  • We don’t have exact dates for anything: movers or flights.
  • We have no clue where we’ll be moving into, since our next duty station doesn’t have military housing like we have here in Germany.
  • We can’t plan any trips for any time after May, since we don’t know where we’ll be or AJ’s next teams work schedule.
  • I’ll have to find a new job — starting over.

To top it off, over the next few months, AJ won’t be able to join me on some of my upcoming adventures due to work commitments. So in hopes of making our last few months in Germany as exciting, yet stress free as possible, we’ve resulted to the following:

  • Communicating – We let each other know dates as soon as we know them, even if they aren’t for sure, we’d rather have a tentative blocked on the calendar, than find ourselves having to make tough decisions.
  • Dividing and conquering – Just because AJ or I are busy with work, we aren’t letting that stop the other one from taking advantage of an exciting opportunity.
  • Smart Purchases – If we do get as far as booking a trip or something, we do one of two things: 1. Book free cancellation/refundable, or 2. If free cancellation isn’t an option, we’re comfortable losing out on that amount. So no big ticket items in the foreseeable future.

Which means we allow ourselves the grace we need to overcome the challenges, and adapt as we need to. While continuing to support each other, personally and professionally.
